This is how Hello Kitty got popular in Korea…

by

The picture gets your attention. The expression is the real punchline. Here is the meaning and the scene behind it, straight from As Much as a Rat’s Tail.

꺄 or 꺅

[kkya] or [kkyak]

LOL; “Oh, joy!”

Hello Kitty’s popularity in Korea is not from little girls, but from women trying to act like them. 꺄 or 꺅 [kkya] or [kkyak] LOL; “Oh, joy!”

Meaning & context

Kkya is simply an onomatopoeic exclamation of joy! Often including an “~~~” ending, and most often used in text messaging or on KakaoTalk: Kkya ~~~ is used by and large by females to describe shrieks of joy, but can be used by men who want to act cute (read – gay) as well.
